Manta Ray Biology

Similar to most species of rays, the wings of a manta ray have a complex mesh of small, interconnected bones which allow it to control its motion very precisely. Pictured below the skeleton of a barn-door skate.

Streamwise cross sections of the manta ray's wings indicate that the shape the wing strongly resembles an airfoil, with a smooth leading edge and a sharp trailing edge.

The photos below were taken by Frank Fish at West Chester University.
